Lurgan vs Derriaghy

Derriaghy beat Lurgan by 4 wickets

Lurgan bow out of Senior Cup

Lurgan bowed out of the TCH Down Democrat Senior Cup last Saturday, going down by 4 wickets to Premier League side Derriaghy, at Pollock Park.

Lurgan went into the match full of confidence after an unbeaten start to the season and decided to bat after winning the toss. Marvin Van Niekerk and Stephen Chambers got off to a steady start but with the score on 22, Chambers fell victim to a ball that rose off a length and was caught off his gloves. Soon after Francois Viljoen departed in similar fashion and Lurgan were 42-2 in the 11th over. Gareth Morrison once again looked in good form, but mistimed a drive and was caught at mid-off. Lurgan were then dealt a cruel blow when Van Niekerk, again showing tremendous form, pulled up with a torn calf muscle, necessitating a runner to be called for. However, obviously restricted by his injury, he was bowled soon after for 31 leaving the home side on 78-4. Two more quick wickets left Lurgan in trouble at 103-6, but Craig Irwin and Nicky McCollum went about reparing the damage. They added 74 for the seventh wicket with Irwin making 55 and McCollum batting very sensibly for 24. Again 3 more quick wickets left Lurgan on 185-9 with 7 overs remaining. Peter Maxwell and Chris Courtney added a valuable 28 runs for the last wicket before Courtney wass bowled in the 49th over to leave the final score 213 all out.

This was a competitive score on a wicket with some variable bounce and Lurgan knew they had a chance if they bowled well. Things started well enough as they restricted the visitors to 61-4 in the 21st over. However, with several of their first choice bowling line-up unavailable they struggled to push home this advantage. Craig Lewis and Colin Crookshanks added 121 for the fifth wicket, with Lewis is particularly dominant form. He made a fine 76, including a huge six on to the roof of the clubhouse.

Derriaghy got home in the 48th over with 4 wickets to spare, but Lurgan will think this was an opportunity missed and will rue the 33 wides they bowled.
